How can we say NO to our CEO?

    By Franco Soldi | Articles | 0 comment | 24 April, 2018 | 0

Key questions to move up in work and life.

How can we say to our CEO or boss that they are making a mistake without taking the risk of being dismissed?

First of all, if we are going to criticize something, it’s better to come up with a solution plan. How do we do that? It’s really complicated to explain in a couple of lines. If we are able to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes (in this case the CEO) and we use a correct empathic language (watch this video), we would achieve our goal: the CEO will understand his mistake; he will realize that we are on his side and we are not trying to prove anything. He will understand that we are just playing for the team. He may not appreciate or consider our idea, but in most of the cases, he will appreciate our value and willing to contribute. To earn a position of trust with our boss requires of many proposals, ideas, and of course, once in a while, disturbing or annoying someone.

Communicate much as you can, there will always be something left. You always affirm that communication is the key that opens all the doors. We just need to observe how people talk on TV or how students deal with oral exams to understand that many of them don’t know how to communicate. Why is communication so important?

What is more important: our knowledge or our capacity of transmitting what we know to others? Communicating is definitively more important than the pieces of knowledge we could have. Having a PhD, three masters and two college degrees is useless if we are not able to communicate our ideas. It’s useless if we are not able to get really in touch with our teammates, our future investors, or the people around us. In my 25 years as an assessor and professional consultant, I have realized that the main problem in a company, a marriage, a relation with a son or daughter, is the same: communication. If we want to take advantage of what we have in our head and our heart, we need to know how to talk. Who does teach us how to communicate? Who does train us in public speaking? in how to create emotions while we speak? Who does talk about empathy?

In a society that punishes and penalizes the leaders is difficult to stand out. Envy is the national sin. In this society prevails consumption and entertainment, as well as the hegemonic thinking. How can we promote the spirit of critical thinking and opposite views?

We can achieve this goal through motivation. We all need to be able to answer the questions: Who am I? And where do I want to go? If your answers generate peace within yourself, you will be able to have your own opinion. You will accept self-criticism and consequently, you will become the person that you really want to be. You won’t be the person that some people want you to be.

Does failure represent the end for an entrepreneur? Or is just a spur for success?

Failure is the path, the only valid formula, the opportunity of restarting from zero. It is not a spur, is just the secret to success. I have been training martial arts for many years. If there isn’t pain after I have trained, I feel that I haven’t done it properly. It is so natural to be on top, as it is to fall. The crucial thing is to keep moving. When you understand this premise, failure is perceived from a different approach. It is not the end of the path; it is just the beginning of a new adventure. The secret is not enjoying success or suffering failure, but enjoying the process and learning from it, no matter what is the result at the end. I have succeeded in my life, but I have failed more. Life is just like Kick Boxing, the only way of learning how to keep your guard up is being kicked in the face.
